The Congressional Medal of Honor Society said it chose the slain educators to receive its Citizen Honors Medal, the highest award it gives to a civilian, after receiving dozens of nominations for their actions during the shooting.

The families of teachers and administrators murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School were at the White House on Friday to meet President Barack Obama and accept medals on behalf of their loved ones.
The funerals for 7-year-old Grace McDonnell, 6-year-old Olivia Engel, 6-year-old Dylan Hockley, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and behavioral therapist Rachel D’Avino were held Friday.
Students Jesse Lewis, Catherine Hubbard, Benjamin Wheeler and Allison Wyatt will all be laid to rest. Teachers Lauren Rousseau and Anne Marie Murphy will also be remembered.
The mourners waited in a slow-moving line, some for more than an hour, in the frigid air outside Clark Associates Funeral Home, to pay respects to 52-year-old Anne Marie Murphy.
