Alabama’s Defensive Effort For The Ages Secures BCS National Championship

Jeremy Shelley kicked five field goals and Trent Richardson broke a 34-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter as No. 2 Alabama beat No. 1 LSU 21-0 on Monday night—the first shutout in BCS title game history.

Early BCS Championship Ratings Down 12 Percent

Auburn’s last-second 22-19 win over Oregon on Monday night drew a 16.1 overnight rating on ESPN. Last season’s Alabama-Texas game earned an 18.2 on Fox, which is available in about 15 percent more homes.

The Auburn Tigers won their first national championship in 53 years, but unlike the previous 13 games of the season, it wasn’t their offense which won them this game – it was their defense.

BCS Notes: Title Game Crowd Sets Stadium Record

The BCS championship crowd of 78,603 set a University of Phoenix Stadium record, easily eclipsing the 74,628 who watched the 2007 BCS championship game between Florida and Ohio State.
