Ralik Hansen, 28, thought it was police at the door so he hid under the couch. His gun then discharged, killing him, according to the FBI.
The incident took place at the Cartier store at Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street on Jan. 30.
The FBI and NYPD have identified the suspect as Ralik Hansen, 28. They say he was a member of a violent interstate robbery crew from Brooklyn that also participated in heists in Atlantic City and Virginia.
The NYPD and the FBI have busted up a ring of robbers who are accused of breaking into ritzy jewelry stores, and stealing more than $1 million worth of watches, all up and down the East Coast.
Five suspects with hammers entered the store at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday and used hammers to smash open a glass display case.
Police are investigating after they say five masked men stole 16 watches valued at more than $700,000 from the Cartier store on Fifth Avenue.
According to police, the suspect went into the Tourneau Watch store on 57th Street just before 3 p.m. on Saturday and asked the salesperson to see a Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.
