Councilman Brad Lander
The bill’s chief sponsor, Councilman Brad Lander, said Friday that job seekers should be judged by their qualifications, not by whether they have enough money to pay their bills.
The bill would establish city grants to raise pay as well as rehire experienced drivers and other school bus employees who lost their jobs or had their incomes drastically cut at the end of the Bloomberg administration.
“You’ve had months and months to fix this problem. Instead mayor, you did nothing. You did nothing. We had to do something for you,” Democrat Jumaane Williams said.
Under the bill, if a community keeps its streets clean for two consecutive years and gets a 90 percent cleanliness grade, the local community board would have the option of reducing its street cleaning to once a week.
