A dead 58-foot whale caused quite a stir on Smith Point Beach on Long Island this week after it washed ashore.
The male fin whale was found at Smith Point County Park about 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
Marine officials said Friday the whale was malnourished and had lesions in its stomach and kidneys. The cause of death won’t be completed until testing comes back on tissue samples.
The 60-foot-long finback whale was found in grave condition stranded on the bay side of Breezy Point around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The 60-foot whale was spotted around 10:30 a.m. and was still alive as of noon, according to the U.S. Coast Guard on scene.
