The Winter Classic is dead this year, but as the NHL buries its most popular regular-season event there is hope that the lockout won’t wipe out the entire season.
It won’t come as a shock to hockey fans. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the NHL has cancelled the 2013 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium.
A large part of Bettman’s role as commissioner is to successfully market the game, avoid labor unrest and protect the health of the league. He’s failed spectacularly in each of these areas throughout his tenure.
The Detroit Red Wings will face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium, a matchup of two Original Six teams at the iconic college football facility that drew more than 104,000 fans for a college hockey game in 2010.
