The City Council voted Tuesday to allow residents to donate via text message. Under the bill, which must be signed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a voter could use their phones to give up to $99 to a candidate in an election cycle.
The comptroller said he will sue for damages for loss of civil rights, mental and emotional harm, loss of professional reputation and loss of dignity.
“The evidence suggests that the potential violations are serious and pervasive across campaign’s fundraising,” the board said in a statement read at the hearing. Liu’s lawyer said an appeal is planned.
The 71-year-old Lopez announced in February that his health was deteriorating and that he was extremely fatigued. Still, talk circulated of a possible council run.
