Verrazano Narrows Bridge
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said Thursday there are a number of concerns associated with a possible march across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in response to the police-custody death of Eric Garner.
Police said a suspect who was arrested for a Staten Island carjacking after fleeing police near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza has now been charged with killing a man.
Police said 25-year-old Tyrell Brown is charged with first-degree robbery and criminal possession of stolen property in Sunday’s incident, and attempted robbery in Tuesday’s incident.
It happened around 1:15 a.m. on the Staten Island-bound side of the toll plaza.
State Sen. Marty Golden and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis are leading the effort to reduce the $15 toll for frequent bridge users from Brooklyn. The toll for E-ZPass tagholders is $10.66 per trip.
This follows Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal earlier this month for Staten Island residents to pay reduced tolls on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo was on Staten Island Thursday afternoon to announce the new effective cost of the toll will drop to $5.50 for Staten Island residents in non-commercial vehicles.
Officer Thomas Choi was reopening the lower roadway of the bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday when he was hit by a car.
