Westbound service on the Long Island Rail Road was suspended for hours early Friday evening after two trains sideswiped and windows were left shattered.
Three westbound lanes on the upper level of the George Washington Bridge will be closed Sunday night into Monday morning, as repair work on the bridge continues.
The Long Island Rail Road has announced plans to provide extra trains during the New Year’s holiday period, with 14 trains on Saturday and Sunday.
Westbound trains could run up to 10 minutes late on the Northeast Corridor between Rahway and Trenton and on the North Jersey Coast Line between Rahway, Long Branch and Bay Head on Friday.
Long Island Rail Road riders are urged to plan alternate routes to and from work until Wednesday as crews work to fix damage caused by a derailed Amtrak train beneath the East River.
