Floodwaters Crash Onto Rockaway Beach As Sandy Rages
Rockaway Beach was on the list for areas of New York City deemed Zone A for evacuation purposes, and by Sunday night, Hurricane Sandy had sent the floodwaters rising.
Zone A Ordered Evacuated, Public Schools Closed Monday
Bloomberg warned residents who live in Zone A that all elevators in the zone will be shut down at 7 p.m. and urged residents to get to higher ground quickly, before subways and bus service is shut down.
Some Residents In Evacuation Zone May Defy Orders To Leave
Bloomberg said that while those who defy the evacuation orders will not be arrested, he cautioned that it would be a selfish decision because it would potentially put first responders at risk if the residents need to be rescued.
After Irene, New York Stock Exchange Will Open Monday
Operators of the historic Big Board and other major U.S. exchanges said they plan to open for trading as usual. Their announcements came after city officials said damage from Tropical Storm Irene wasn’t as severe as feared in New York’s financial district.
