5 Best Eating And Drinking Events This Weekend

Winter marches on, but you can cure your winter blues with a dance festival, a pig festival, or a film festival. Read on for details. Stay warm and have fun! By Jessica Allen.

On January 14, the New York Jewish Film Festival took over the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center to screen "films that investigate, record, and celebrate the Jewish experience." Jointly sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Jewish Museum, the festival has been going on for 24 years. This year's slate features movies from the US, Argentina, Israel, and elsewhere. Wednesday, January 14, through Thursday, January 29, see schedule for details.

A festival of dance, FLICfest stands for "Feature Length Independent Choreography." It's the only "festival dedicated solely to the art of the feature-length dance" in Brooklyn. This year's six featured choreographers include Nicole Wolcott, Andre Zachary, Mana Hashimoto, and Jin Ju Song-Begin. Two feature-length works and cabaret performances will be held each night. This family-friendly festival celebrates snow. The annual Winter Jam transforms Central Park into a winter wonderland. You and the kiddies can learn to cross-country ski, snowshoe, kicksled, or snowboard; play in the snow field; track animals with the Urban Park Rangers; gobble a goodie at the Taste NY Winter Market; or just admire the antics in the Doggie Snow Zone. Saturday, January 24, 11 am to 3 pm, free.

Sponsored by the "Department of Homeland Absurdity," the Idiotarod features costume-wearing teams racing tricked out shopping carts around the streets of New York City. The 11th annual event will take place regardless of rain, sleet, snow, or wintry mix, so make sure you're superhero tights or slutty princess garb allows for long underwear. There will be prizes! Saturday, January 24, 12 pm, registration required.

At Cochon 555, five chefs and five winemakers will tackle five pigs. Well, not literally. Each chef will each prepare and serve six dishes made from a 200-pound heritage breed pig, all united by a common goal: "to promote sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs" by serving amazing food. Admission also gets you various cocktails, a butchering demonstration, cheese, oysters, and wine. Sunday, January 25, 4 to 8 pm, $125, tickets required.
