Light up your life by making a purchase from one of New York's best candle shops. Everyone looks better by candlelight, and, depending on what kind you buy, everything smells better too. By Jessica Allen.

As you might expect from a store that takes as its name the Spanish word for "fire," Fuego 718 stocks several types of candles and candle holders among its Williamsburg shelves. It specializes in handmade goods from around the world, from Mexican Dia de Los Muertos figures to ornaments from Italy and Bangladesh to metal art from Haiti to hand-printed bed clothes handmade in the United States. Go forth and browse.

At KADOnyc, a cute boutique in Greenwich Village, the candles come from Voluspa, and they are almost too beautiful to burn. The mandarin candle comes in a container styled to look like a Moroccan pot, with browns and yellows intertwining. The champagne rose, in contrast, is long, slender, and lilac. With two wicks and a burn time of about 50 hours, these babies are worth the price.

Pink Olive has two locations, one in the East Village and one in Park Slope, both offering the best in lovely accessories for your home and person. The cashmere candle, for example, has lime, vanilla, and patchouli notes, while wild fern will make you think you've left New York for the lush forests of Washington State, so appealing is its leafy scent. You can get onesies, art, knick-knacks, and jewelry, among other goods, as well.

Sonoei

Saffron, in Fort Greene, is part art gallery and part gift shop, the perfect store to browse for holiday presents, even if you intend to keep said presents, including jewelry and housewares, for yourself. We particularly like the beeswax candles by local artisans sono.ei, designed to look like apples, mushrooms, and other edibles or critters. Saffron is also a flower shop, so you can get a bespoke arrangement to match your purchases.

ScentElate

This Hells Kitchen store offers the best scents in the neighborhood, primarily in the form of incense and candles. In addition, Scent Elate has an overflowing selection of lotions, oils, salts, specialty lamps, and other paraphernalia to give your home or special place a particular aroma. Knowledgeable, pressure-free sales associates will advise on the best products for your purposes. Have a look around, and prepare to be illuminated.
