New York Authentic Mexican Restaurant Week kicked off Sunday, meaning a number of Mexican restaurants in the city are opening their doors and offering discounts (see the full list here). Here are the best haunts to make a toast to Latin American culture. By Selena Ricks-Good.

National restaurant chain Rosa Mexicano has partnered with Gran Marnier to offer a special cocktail, the Margarita Francesca, through October 15 for Hispanic Heritage Month. The drink reverses the proportions of a traditional margarita, using 1.5 oz. Grand Marnier, 1 oz. Alma Tequila, 1 oz. lime juice, 1/2 oz. orange juice and 1/2 oz. simple syrup.

Tucked away on the ever-changing Bowery, Hecho En Dumbo (formerly of Brooklyn) serves an upscale take on Mexican street food with sophisticated cocktails to match. Try the Esmeralda (muddled cucumber and basil with Farmer’s Botanical Gin, Ilegal Joven Mezcal and lime juice) or the Flor Morada (Organic Crop Vodka, hibiscus flower tea, Combier orange liqueur and lime juice).

La Palapa is already known for weekly cocktail specials such as Sangria Sundays–$10 for pitchers of White Hibiscus Sangria and Red Citrus Sangria all day and night. From Monday, Sept. 26 through Friday, Sept. 30, the restaurant will offer nightly tequila and mezcal tastings featuring a different brand each night. In the meantime, try house cocktails such as  the Tamarind Cosmo (Absolut Mandarin, tamarind and fresh lime) or the Pink Cadillac Low Rider Margarita (Cuervo Gold Tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice and pomegranate juice in a chile and salt-rimmed glass).
