NEW YORK (CBS 2) – When 35-year-old Tara Marques used to look at her profile in the mirror, she wasn’t too happy.
She thought her jaw line lacked definition, and she knew exactly what to blame: the genes from her dad’s side of the family.
“He has the same thing. I saw him last night and I said, ‘I got this from you,’” Marques said.
But little do people know, there’s a procedure that can sharpen up jaw lines and improve profiles in just 10 minutes, CBS 2’s Dr. Holly Phillips reports.
It’s a procedure that works like a vacuum, and Upper East Side plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Reed said it’s a quick and easy surgery.
“The vacuum has enough energy to take out fat, but nothing else comes with it. Not nerves or blood vessels or any other tissues,” Dr. Reed said.
Once Marques learned about the procedure, which costs between $3,000 and $5,000, she immediately signed up.
“Dr. Reed saw me and said ‘No, we can fix this.’ I said okay and I was very happy about that,” Marques said.
After an anesthesiologist put Marques under light sedation, a tiny canula that is just 2 millimeters wide was inserted through three tiny incisions. In just 10 minutes, all the extra fat cells under the chin were removed through a vacuum.
The three incisions used are so tiny they don’t require stitches and usually heal with no scaring. Patients go home just an hour later with only a small bandage under the chin.
“The next day, the dressing comes off, they bathe and shower and return to full activity,” Dr. Reed said.
Before, the chin has an almost bulbous appearance, but after the procedure, the jaw line becomes slimmer and more defined. In Marques’ case, the area under the chin had some extra fat that was removed.
“It’s more genetic than anything else. While it’s seen in heavier women, most of the women we see are thin women who just see this bulge in their neck and find it unattractive and it makes them look older,” Dr. Reed said.
Now, Marques’ jaw line is lifted and sharper.
Although it takes six months for all the swelling to go down, Marques said she is thrilled with her results after just two weeks.
“I love it. I love it. I’m happy I actually have a line, you know, like jaw line you can see it,” Marques said.
There’s nothing like being pleased with your profile, Marques said.
