Town officials believe it's a solution to all of the traffic fatalities that have occurred there.
Three people have been killed in the last 18 months.
Many drivers seem to recognize that something needs to be done.
"If it saves lives, it's good. It's a good thing," one driver told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. "I mean, it's gonna slow down. There's going to be a lot of traffic going through the town, but if it saves lives, it's good."
The new plan is seen as a low-cost alternative to a more elaborate and lengthy reconstruction project.
Park rangers were patrolling Main Street as part of a response to the dangerous situation.
