SMITHTOWN, NY (WCBS 880) – There is a plan to turn the four-lane Main Street in downtown Smithtown into a two-lane road.

Town officials believe it’s a solution to all of the traffic fatalities that have occurred there.
Many drivers seem to recognize that something needs to be done.
“If it saves lives, it’s good. It’s a good thing,” one driver told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs. “I mean, it’s gonna slow down. There’s going to be a lot of traffic going through the town, but if it saves lives, it’s good.”
The new plan is seen as a low-cost alternative to a more elaborate and lengthy reconstruction project.
Park rangers were patrolling Main Street as part of a response to the dangerous situation.
