NEWARK, NJ (1010 WINS) – Does Newark Mayor Cory Booker have higher aspirations? Some political experts think so after the mayor launched his own political action committee.

Booker has denied a run for higher office, but the Newark mayor recently launched Cory PAC.

Patrick Murray, founding director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, says it’s a signal that Booker is running for something.

1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg reports: Political Experts Say Booker Eyeing Higher Office

“Raising money is the first signal to other powers that be out there that you are interested in higher elected office,” said Murray. “It’s a test balloon of sorts.”

Murray says Booker already has solid name recognition state-wide and may be eyeing Frank Lautenberg’s senate seat in 2014.

“This is one of the smartest guys around, he has national support, he’s tied into the White House, he’s extremely ambitious and energetic and articulate,” said executive director of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind Poll Peter Woolley. “He can get his head any policy issue.”

Booker however has denied the claims and issued a statement saying the filing of papers for the formation of PAC doesn’t mean he’s running against senators Lautenberg or Robert Menendez

He said, “My immediate focus is to achieve my goals as Mayor of the city of Newark which will continue our successful transformation into a leading American city for public safety, economic abundance and nurturing of children and family life.”
