Trenton Police Come Under Fire Trying To Disperse Large Crowd

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) - Police in Trenton found themselves in the middle of a bad situation as it got even worse Sunday night.

Noise complaints prompted police to respond to the Prospect Village housing project on Prospect Street, the Times reported. As police arrived they were greeted by approximately 200 people, who were there for a party.

As they tried to disperse the crowd, shots rang out, police spokesman Sgt. Tom McDonough told the Times. Instantly the crowd reacted, and police found themselves in what McDonough described as "chaos."

Police called for backup, and noticed a man on the ground with a head wound. It turns out he was intoxicated and fell, injuring his head. It's not clear if he fell because he was knocked over by the fleeing crowd or whether he was injured before the shooting started.

More shots were fired, although police told the Times they did not believe they were being targeted. One person was reportedly hit in the stomach, and is in stable condition at Capital Health Regional Medical Center.
