NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – While thousands of people fled the city for the holiday weekend, many Manhattanites who stayed in the city are enjoying the “ghost town” feeling the weekend brings with everyone else gone.
“I know a lot of people who like to stick around for the weekend because it’s a quieter, cooler New York,” one woman said.
A man on the Upper West Side said he found a parking spot in a flash while a manager of a construction firm said he loves the city on a holiday because it’s quiet and easy.
“It’s nice,” he said. “During the holidays, the city’s empty.”
Another woman stopped at a grocery store to do her shopping on Broadway and noticed something strange. “The store is empty,” she said. “The city is quite empty and it’s nice for us who are still here.”

Meanwhile, the line for brunch at Gina La Fornarina is usually wrapped around the block, but only a couple of tables were occupied Saturday morning.
“I guess everybody went to the Hamptons,” said Gina La Fornarina ’s head waiter. “We hope people will be back soon.”
As one man put it, you don’t have to go far to go on vacation.
