With More Than 200 People Shot This Year, Newark Residents Say City Crime Is Getting Worse

NEWARK, NJ (1010 WINS) — Many Newark residents say the city’s Safe City campaign isn’t working.

So far this year, there have been more than 175 shootings in Newark, leaving more than 200 people killed or injured.

1010 WINS’ John Montone reports: Newark Residents Say Crime Is Getting Worse

In June, Mayor Cory Booker announced the city would be beefing up security with more officers on the streets and stricter curfew enforcement this summer.

While Newark’s acting police director Samuel DeMaio claims the campaign is working, residents say the streets don’t seem any safer.

“I’m listening all night long to sirens and stuff, people getting shot,” said one woman who has lived in Newark for almost half a century.

One man said residents are like prisoners in their own homes.

Last week, City Council approved a measure requiring fast food restaurants open after 9 pm to post armed guards

I’VE BEEN IN NEWARK SINCE 1955 AND I’D HAD NEVER SEEN NOTHING LIKE WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING SINCE THE LAYOFFS OF THE 167 POLICE OFFICERS. THE MAYOR INTRODUCES A “SAFE UMMER INITIATIVE PROGRAM” WHERE HE STATES THAT BETWEEN JUNE 1 – SEPT. 1 OF 2010 THERE WERE 35 MURDERS. HE PROMISES AND TELLS THOSE PRESENT THERE THAT “THIS WILL NEVER EVER HAPPEN AGAIN IN NEWARK” WHERE HE WE ARE HALF WAY THROUGH AND HE NUMBERS REFLECT DIFFERENT. NOW THE ACLU HAS FILED FOR AND HAS GOTTEN AN INVESTIGATION ON POLICE BRUTALITY GOING ON, YOU HAVE THE CITY COUNCIL PROMOTING IT, THE CITIZENS WANT MORE POLICE AND THE MAYOR AND DIRECTOR KEEP IGNORING THE FACT THAT “LESS POLICE = MORE CRIME” HOW CAN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DO THEIR JOBS WHEN THEY ARE UNDERMANNED AND NOT PROPERLY TRAINED WITH AN INVESTIGATION WATCHING EVERY MOVE THEY MAKE?

It is very easy to judge while sitting in front of a computer screen. However, as a person familiar with the city and who has worked directly for the last two administrations in the City of Newark, I wonder in you would make the same uninformed statements to the children of this city. Would you or could you look into the eyes of a 7 year old male and tell him he is destined to fail, go to jail or be murdered before he is 18 years old. We, as a society, are slowly becoming desensitized to the plights of our people. We oftern generalized and condemn an entire culture, city or religion based on the actions of a deviant subculture that was engendered by decades of educational and economic neglect. Some of your critisms have validity and at times, I too wonder if there is a solution to the mayhem occuring in our city. However, who are we judge, unless like our forefathers, we contribute be being the labor, architechs and engineers of change. These are trying times in the City of Newark, NJ and we should all question not the victims nor its citizenry but the leadership which fails to confort a community that is in pain.

  4. Educated Newarker says:

Wow i see the ignorant comments are limited to certain boards huh.. I am a newark resident and yes its bad, but to automatically assume it’s from bad parenting is definitely wrong. I know people with college degrees in the street. So to assume its parenting, while for some it might be true, is off the mark. Let’s talk about lack of jobs in the area. Let’s talk about programs designed to keep kids and such off the street being the first things eliminated when budget crunches hit(usually due to someone lining their pockets, but that’s another story). Let’s talk about schools that are not educating students because teachers are aggravated that their hands are tied as to what they can and can’t do and can and can’t teach, once again due to budget. Everybody always turn to the easy argument when talking about whats wrong with newark instead of looking into deeper problems. Especially those that don’t live here, but assume they know everything about this city and it’s residents. I invite those people to spend a month living in newark and truly live and experience all aspects, not just what you read or hear.

perhaps once the women learn to stop celebrating sexual prowess over character, travel and get and education, they shall stop perpetuating the process having babies with no means to support them, whilst MacDaddy is gone or in jail, leaving their children to be raised on the streets…no wonder they are the bottom of the totem pole.

    1. Ellen says:

Charles great post. Right on target and 100 per cent correct.

  7. Nick says:

Hey. Aren’t these the same sh/ts that keeps complaining about the police presence? NOW they want the cops?

  8. Bushelfoote says:

Figure out why and you’ll also find out who….maybe then it could be a thing that could be headed off at the pass….

  9. Jimmy says:

Sounds like it’s safer in Iraq.
