Extensive Search Conducted At Home Of Suspected Child Killer Levi Aron

Family Of 8-Year-Old Leiby Kletzky Thanks NYC And World For Their Support

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police reduced their presence at accused killer Levi Aron’s home Friday night, carting off bags of evidence and leaving the backyard riddled with shallow holes.

“They’re looking for every evidence,” neighbor Tanin Mohammed told CBS 2’s Dave Carlin.

The home is expected to remain under police guard for the foreseeable future as a Brooklyn grand jury prepares a murder indictment that could be issued some time next week.

Aron has already pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and kidnapping charges.

Investigators did not reveal what was found at the man’s home.  Each new piece of evidence, however, fleshes out the personality profile of the man who lived alone following his divorce from a Memphis woman and before that an Israeli woman. Both marriages were brief.

No violent criminal history has turned up, but police are still trying to determine what possessed the suspect to allegedly take a lost boy off the streets in the first place.

It was a full-court press Friday for clues in the place where police said 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky was murdered.  Aron is accused of picking up Kletzky on a Brooklyn street, taking him home, smothering him and butchering his body.

Neighbors wondered about the horror that might have visited their lives.

“My son goes to school right here every day. That’s the entrance I take him in and out of for kindergarten and first grade and here this guy is — this animal over here,” Hiram Segarra told CBS 2’s Lou Young.

Neighbors believe Aron suffered a head injury as a small child and had counseling for behavioral problems.

“I think there’s something being hidden,” Betty Perri said.

Aron has also been ordered by a judge to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is being held in protective custody and is being kept under suicide watch. His attorney said his client hallucinates and hears voices.

Aron has written a confession which ended with “I’m sorry for the hurt that I caused,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. Police said he has admitted to suffocating Kletzky with a bath towel.

On the way to his arraignment Thursday, Aron was greeted by shouts of “kill the murderer!” from a crowd outside the 67th Precinct in East Flatbush, where he was being held.

Thursday, police disclosed that Aron had wounds that suggested that Kletzky may have struggled with him. They said Aron had scratches on his wrists and arms.

Police are also looking at video of a wedding that Aron may have attended the night before he said he killed Kletzky.

Kletzky’s family is now in a week-long period of mourning, known as Shiva. During this period, friends and supporters will gather around the Kletzky’s family to lend their condolences, supply food and offer whatever comfort and commiseration they can.

“We all cry and cry and can’t stop crying for the loss of the family and the child,” one woman told CBS 2’s John Slattery.

“I don’t think there was a dry eye. When I heard about it, I just literally started crying and felt so bad for the family,” Rabbi Ari Pollack said.

Jonathan Schwartz said his son was a friend of Kletzky and tried to explain the death to his child.

1010 WINS’ Kathleen Maloney reports: Grieving Family Asks For Privacy

“I said God loves kids and we don’t understand why God did it. Obviously I didn’t give him all the details of what happened,” Schwartz said.

Visitors to the Kletzky family are being greeted by a sign at the door of their Borough Park apartment building thanking them for their thoughts and prayers.

“We are forever grateful to God. We would also like to express to each and every individual, to our friends and neighbors and fellow New Yorkers and to all the volunteers…and to all from around the world who had us in their thoughts and prayers, from the depths of our mourning hearts, thank you,” the sign read.

If convicted of killing Leiby Kletzky, what is the appropriate punishment in this case? Do you think Levi Aron is insane? Sound off in our comments section.

where are you getting your crazy information dude, I’m a Jewish daughter and that does not happen to any of us!!!

  2. Marie says:

Leiby did not take the bus home that day, his mom wrote a note to the camp, giving Leiby permission to walk, it was about 7 blocks.

    1. LD says:

Do you have any other information on the parents involvement in this? Are you in the neighborhood where this happened?

      1. Marie Spiridigliozzi says:

All the information I know is from the news on TV, radio and internet.

    2. LD says:

@marie What’s your take on this?

Aron didn’t do it. הנופלים http://wp.me/p1GpdK-U

  5. Marie says:

The family is mourning. The Jewish Religion, has to mourn for 7 days, its called sit and shiver. I heard the mom, doesn’t know what really happened to her son, all the gory details.

    1. Jeff Rosen ret NYPD says:

Marie, Melody was asking about Levi Aron’s family, not Leiby’s.

I am so sorry for the loss of this beautiful boy from his family. What a trajedy. He is with God now. No more tears. No more sorrow. He is blessed and home with God again. That is a beautiful thing that should not be marred by this trajedy. The man who did this was Psychotic. He needs to be put to sleep like you would a dog that killed a person. Thre is no cure for this type of mental illness.

  7. Bonnie says:

He and Casey Anthony have the same look in their eyes!!! Scary!!

  8. markiv11 says:

Look at his eyes…not the eyes of a normal person…that’s the eyes of a psychopath.
eyes are the window to the soul…which he doesn’t have,,,,he did not do this for fun, or because he liked to kill, it was about power and control for him.
Keeping the feet symbolized for him the journey that Leiby took.
I hope Leiby is the king of heaven..May he rest in peace. .: (

  9. markiv11 says:

The punishment should fit the crime, he should be dismembered while he is still alive, first his feet, below the ankles, then his hands below the wrist, then his right eye, followed by his left, then his nose, but his EARS he keeps, so hears the shriek of every person he encounters, say MY GOD WHAT IS THAT THING, will echo in his perfect ears……that is the perfect punishment…wallowing in a life of freakish misery for the rest of his life…

  10. susan says:

btw – I would be very surprised if Leiby was his first victim. My guess is that he has done this before, they suspect that and it is the reason they are digging up his yard. This man killed simply for the act of killing. His “motive” is bs because he had no real motive. He is a monster. I pray my guess is wrong.

  12. No more Yamaka? says:

Has anybody noticed that Levi no longer wears his head yamaka…sorry for the spelling.

I think his been disowned by his Jewish community that he has been forced not to wear one.

    1. roopali says:

I think now that he is going to jail you can’t wear a yamaka. He may hide something underneath there. But you are right he maybe disowned by his jewish community.

  13. NO J_LO Please says:

@sad in NY….That’s being disrespectful to the family…

    1. new york says:

Yes this was very sad story only if the mother took the time to pick up son.what is 5 minutes of the day for safety of child.Child welfare should look into this case because this child was thrown to the wolves and look at the result.Bottom line is watch your kids and make sure they are safe even if that means being over-protective I rather my child come home then something happen..And yes we know only one to blame is killer but the idea is to avoid people like this and if he was walking with mom this would never of happened. And the name NO J LO is a little disrespective show some class.

      1. new york says:

sad to say but you got it all wrong

sad to say my kid s come home because I pick them up someone else had it wrong

      3. jc says:

@ New York : I have a son about this little boys age and my son begs me to let him ride his bike down the road or to let him play at the basketball field while I watch my son play baseball right next to it AND I generally say no. Little by little I have been letting my kids do things like play outside in the yard without me there. My sons are 10, 8 and 7 and I have been giving them some new independence. To be honest I would have said no to walking home from the bus BUT when you live in the City most kids do this daily. It is normal and occurs often. I am a bit overbearing as a mom b/c of animals like this but let’s get this straight -This is NOT the mother’s fault – it is this criminal’s fault. She was just letting her son become a little bit of man slowly. She let him get off the bus and walk a SHORT distance – not even to home she was a few blocks away b/c she thought it was too long to walk home all the way. They even practiced on Friday. This was a gradual thing they were working on b/c her kid begged her to do it as most young boys at 9 will do. She took many precautions. So you really shouldn’t be so cruel and btw the parents made this decision together as a team.

      4. Be safe says:

Bottom line is 9 years old is to young to walk home alone by himself or herself .Right now with all the talk how safe the neighborhood is and how they let there kids walk alone does anyone think all the weirdos and crazies will now target that area as a easy prey.I hope they start teaching there kids to scream yell and run away from strangers maybe parents should train kids to not stop for anyone if lost maybe walk up to a lady instead of male. And if giving your child the freedom to walk try to get a group of kids together always better in numbers.I think if we learned anything from this is to prepare your child for worse situation maybe even highlight a safe point on the route home.

  14. marymmg says:

NY won’t allow what I believe to be the appropriate punishment. So whatever the next best alternative is.

  15. Sede says:

Why do we want to rehabilitate this supposedly insane individual. A grown man does not take a little boy off the street for good reasons. No jail time or therapy will rehabilitate him. Sexual psychopaths do not become cured. Why let them live!

regardless of what religion they are or if they are “god fearing” applies not. to lose a child in any manner is a painful indescribable feeling that you cannot rate on a scale. and to lose your child at the hands of a stranger, it is common human behavior to do nothing but wish the worst onto the hands that delivered the tragedy. his parents are grieving, they have their relationship with the lord and he will forgive and bless them.. that is not for us to decide… everyone is entitled to feel believe follow and say whatever we desire thats. lets let this boys parents feel and say and grieve in their way without trying to force feed our opinions down this family and communities throat. until you have lost a child you could not begin to fathom what they are feeling and what thoughts truelly truelly come to their mind. this man will get whatever punishment the law sees fit BUT THE REAL JUSTICE WILL COME WHEN HE GOES TO THE LORD ON HIS JUDGEMENT DAY! which we as a community can only hope is soon

Either way his days are numbered

    1. NO J_LO Please says:

p.diddy>>>what is your point? Your comment has nothing to do with this family’s tragedy..

The nation is mourning the death of an innocent little boy and all you have to worry about is the divorce of some celeb??

      Take it else where…please..

    God wants him death.

  23. MIke says:

He has a human body, all right, but not a human soul. Even an animal won’t kill for fun just for survival (to eat). He has a soul of the devil.

@Abby, since when is a statement called ignorant….the statement obviously did not make or spoke of it self….

Also, I don’t see you jumping on anyone else throat for all the cursing, death wishing, and all the antisemetic anti jew comments or all the other bad things being said but you decided to say something jump on my throat for some harmless innocent comment that was mean in all good faith for all involved….Go figure…

If you read my original post, the last comment, I said I apologize if my comments offended anyone…you obviously can’t read….or worse have no heart to forgive my ignorance in the way I misspoke..

And to make things clear I did NOT mean anything of the sort like what you believe….You seem to over react on suspicions,,,all you had to do was pose a question about asking me to clarify my statement…

Another thing, I never in my life imposed my beliefs on anyone…let alone a jewish people…I love Jewish people and all people in general.. I am not racist, or anything that I would put anyone down like you did..

But that’s ok, I am not you or like the others…I know how to forgive, I forgive you and Levi….

    2. Martha says:

FIrst of all, we SIt Shiva, we do not “sit and shiver.” Beyond that understandable mistake, his lawyer claims Aron hears voices but the only voice says “plead insanity, you’ll get out in a few years.” Look at psycho who attempted to murder Pres. Reagan: he served time in an institution, not such a rough incarceration, now takes extended, unsupervised trips from looney bin. What if he takes a fancy to another actress or public figure? Not so crazy that he doesn’t want to be out and about…This insanity defense is too easy, too available. Not every psychopath is insane and they need to be executed or locked away, without possibility of parole, for their entire life.
What dignity and goodness little Leiby’s family and community have shown. Very moving and heartbreaking.

  31. Barre Flynn says:

This life of Leiby is sending us all a message… You have no idea how long your children will be with you so spend as much valuable time as you possibly can with them lest this tradigy befall your family. Live simply and take the time to love your children.

  32. world gone mad says:

If he is insane and hallucinates, how could he hold a normal job, drive a car and all…..????
I hope that he, together with all the likes of him, will be executed!

    1. Marie says:

The lawyer was the one who told him to say that, I don’t think I believe that. Plus he pleaded not guilty. All the evidence is there, and he pleads not guilty, His lawyer again told him to do that.

HE NEEDS TO BE ELIMINATED FROM THE FACE OF THIS EARTH… IT SHOULD BE AN EYE FOR AN EYE.. I AM SO SORRY FOR THE LITTLE BOY WHO HAD TO FEEL SO MUCH PAIN AND AGONY DUE TO A CRUEL ANIMAL, WHO WAS AN ABORTION THAT LIVED… HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN BORN..

  35. Jessica Beland says:

Drop him off in Boro Park. Save the tax payers some money and let that community deal with him. This man is a monster.

  36. Jay says:

Suicide watch? Oh it’d be a suicide watch all right. I’d watch while he committed suicide. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Why waste tax payers time and money keeping this monster in protective custody or try to keep him from killing himself. NY doesn’t have the death penalty so if he wants to kill himself that’d be the next best thing.

  40. Riki says:

Yes! He is insane. Do do such an act, you cannot be in your right mind. But let us judge the person by what he did. He killed and dismembered a child – enough said. Why do we have to waste any more time on him? Do away with him, he is a blemish on the human race.

  41. ROB says:

ALL I CAN SAY IS DEATH PENALTY….OR TAKE HIM TO BOROUGH PARK LET THEM GET JUSTICE LIKE BIBLICAL TIMES STONE HIM ….

  42. David Ruffin says:

Unfortunately, there have been sick and deranged people in all eras of the human race. Poor Lieby was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Imagine a lost child asking anyone else for directions…..you’d call 911 immediately! Instead, he encountered a psycho – a Jeffrey Dahmer……what terrible terrible luck for this poor child and his family. As for the murderer….he’ll never see the light of day again, whether in a cell, an institution or executed. I would prefer to see him executed, to ensure that he never gets out. They’re letting John Hinckley out on “visits” now…….dangerous!!!!!!

    1. Marie says:

I was wondering why Lieby didn’t go to one of the stores, and ask for directions. Also this wedding that Aroin took him, and got home at 11:20PM, and Lieby watch TV. He is not allowed to watch TV.

      1. Should not have happened says:

Why is he not allowed to watch tv? and had his parents advised him to ask for help from mothers with kids, stores, or police or their own sharim police, this would not have happened…

  44. 2gruesome2b says:

from what i understand about the crime, the youngster was following the perp, and indicated to him that he was lost. first degree murder requires premeditation, planning, intent and the rest of the whole nine yards. this appears to be an unfortunate chance meeting, which would rule out first degree, as the law states it. as heinous as is the crime, it does not rise to the level of first degree, but perhaps someone with a legal background could enlighten us if this assumption is incorrect.

    1. John says:

Of course it was premeditated…………..after the animal realized that there are a lot of people looking for the kid and there is no way out, he PLANNED to kill, which is in a definition considered premeditation.

    2. Outraged says:

Perhaps this was planned? maybe he was lurking outside the camp somehow? We will never know – but what strikes me as odd is that this happened on the VERY FIRST day that the child was walking home alone…. Eye for an eye, as mentioned in previous comments is the way to go, but we are in NYS – and this is not allowed. He confessed and pled not guilty – what kind of maddness is that?

      1. outraged says:

Totally agreed with John – he acted in cold and calculating way when he used the knife on a child’s body

  45. Heart Broken Jew says:

Levi Aron is a murderer and justifying it by hearing voices should lead the state legislators into passing a law that any person with psycho illness that hears voices should live in a special psycho home and not be allowed to live on the city streets, The cost of NYC Po;ice department for this search was over $2 million dollars and to keep him in a home his entire life would cost about a quarter of a million. and now to keep him in prison will cost the State 50k per year, it will cost the City aprox 1 Million in prosecution so make your calculations

    1. margie says:

Well stated! I agree with you!

  46. lucy says:

I hope he never has the chance to do that to another child…what he did was horrific. I believe eye for and eye.

    1. John says:

Agreed 100%, eye for an eye, real justice.

  47. Michael Huang says:

Levi would need to be treated by psychiatrist!

  48. rhonda says:

DO UNTO HIM AS HE DID UNTO THAT POOR LITTLE BOY

  49. SIGMUND FRUIT says:

THIS MAN NEEDS TREATMENT AND UNDERSTANDING INSTEAD OF BEING LOCKED UP.AFTER ALL THIS IS A HUMAN BEING.

    1. John says:

You’re right he needs treatment, one and for all, last treatment in this animal’s life.

      1. lucy says:

Yeah he needs treatment…to be treated exactly like he treated that little boy….sorry sigmund….that monster is not a human being.

      2. margie says:

Please don’t compare him to an animal. An animal would never do such a thing. Only human beings are capable of such evils.

    2. Pei says:

But he didn’t treat the little boy like human.

And he needs to be locked up. Do you want to chance it…that he will do it again to another child?

    3. Beebee says:

TREATMENT? Seriously don’t you think his lawyers came up with that, plead out and he ends up in a nut house and kills again. Let’s hope he gets what he deserves before there is even a trial.

      1. God Speaks says:

The parents if they are truly God fearing people would have or will have to forgive Levi for their own good. Don’t think keeping hate, resentment, revenge and ill feelings towards Levi would do them any good in the long run unless they want tumors, cancers, depression and all sorts of sickness to come upon them. They would accomplish nothing but being more miserable and besides they have other small kids to worry about.

God said who ever is free of sin let them cast the first stone..Absolutely no one is free of any sin in Gods eyes. Sin, no matter how small or big and no matter who does it, it is all the same with God. Any sin has the same outcome and same payment “Death”. Who shall be first then?

        Romans 5:12 (KJV)

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

        Romans 6:16 (KJV)
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

        Romans 6:23 (KJV)
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Having said that, I am not defending Levi at all. I am not standing up for Levi. I am just saying we have got to let the laws of the land take precedence in this sort of situation. We have got to wait and get all the facts and allow him his rights to a fair trial and hopefully he will be found guilty and get life in prison although execution would be more appropiate but in NY is not permitted.

        (KJV)
        Deuteronomy 21:22
And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:

I am so sad by the outcome of the search. I wish that Levi would have just let the boy go as soon as he said he panicked instead of killing him. Now if he goes to jail I believe he will be taken care off and sooner or later will end up like Jeffrey Dahmer killed.

Little angel rest in peace and God I feel so bad for the family it is beyond me..

Lets all pray for the family and reach out in any way possibly they will need all the help they can get for months and years to come…God bless them…

I apologize if my comments here have offended anyone. I don’t mean to.

      2. Abby says:

God speaks: While I respect your own religious views, forgiving this monster who murdered their child is not a religious requirement of the Jewish faith. Your statement, “If they are truly God fearing people…” is extremely ignorant and offensive.

      3. God Speaks says:

@ Abby, I stand corrected…after reading the bit of my statement I can see how it might be found offensive..I should have phrase it differently, just goes to show no one is perfect even me or you…

I don’t agree with the way you came off calling me ignorant though…You could have been more educated and nicer about it.. You see that is why your type of attitude helps no one here and all it does is adds fuel to the fire…chill lady…. you missed my entire statement for that one bit of error….

      4. Abby says:

God Speaks: I never claimed anyone is perfect nor did I call you ignorant. If you read my comment carefully, you’ll see I called your statement ignorant. I have no problem with you or your religious views and how you live your life accordingly but what I don’t appreciate is when you (or anyone else) impose(s) your own beliefs onto others. If that is not what you were doing then I apologize. Your statement “If they were truly God fearing people…” implies that if the Kletzkys do not forgive this murderer (i.e. subscribe to your religious beliefs) then they are not God fearing people. If this is not what you intended and you simply misspoke then I apologize.

      5. Jen says:

nobody is condemning him for being imperfect (ie.having a less than charming personality), he needs capital punishment for brutally killing an innocent human being. Somebody read the bible a little too literally. Use some logic, if you are in fact, an adult with an IQ above 50

    4. Mike says:

He has a human body, all right, but not a human soul. Even an animal won’t kill for fun just for survival (to eat). He has a soul of the devil.

    5. margie says:

The inportance of human beings is over rated!!
