NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police reduced their presence at accused killer Levi Aron’s home Friday night, carting off bags of evidence and leaving the backyard riddled with shallow holes.

“They’re looking for every evidence,” neighbor Tanin Mohammed told CBS 2′s Dave Carlin.

The home is expected to remain under police guard for the foreseeable future as a Brooklyn grand jury prepares a murder indictment that could be issued some time next week.

Aron has already pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and kidnapping charges.

Investigators did not reveal what was found at the man’s home. Each new piece of evidence, however, fleshes out the personality profile of the man who lived alone following his divorce from a Memphis woman and before that an Israeli woman. Both marriages were brief.

No violent criminal history has turned up, but police are still trying to determine what possessed the suspect to allegedly take a lost boy off the streets in the first place.

It was a full-court press Friday for clues in the place where police said 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky was murdered. Aron is accused of picking up Kletzky on a Brooklyn street, taking him home, smothering him and butchering his body.

Neighbors wondered about the horror that might have visited their lives.

“My son goes to school right here every day. That’s the entrance I take him in and out of for kindergarten and first grade and here this guy is — this animal over here,” Hiram Segarra told CBS 2′s Lou Young.

Neighbors believe Aron suffered a head injury as a small child and had counseling for behavioral problems.

“I think there’s something being hidden,” Betty Perri said.

Aron has also been ordered by a judge to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. He is being held in protective custody and is being kept under suicide watch. His attorney said his client hallucinates and hears voices.

Aron has written a confession which ended with “I’m sorry for the hurt that I caused,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. Police said he has admitted to suffocating Kletzky with a bath towel.

WCBS 880′s Marla Diamond reports: Aron Waived His Right To Appear Before Grand Jury

On the way to his arraignment Thursday, Aron was greeted by shouts of “kill the murderer!” from a crowd outside the 67th Precinct in East Flatbush, where he was being held.

Thursday, police disclosed that Aron had wounds that suggested that Kletzky may have struggled with him. They said Aron had scratches on his wrists and arms.

Police are also looking at video of a wedding that Aron may have attended the night before he said he killed Kletzky.

Kletzky’s family is now in a week-long period of mourning, known as Shiva. During this period, friends and supporters will gather around the Kletzky’s family to lend their condolences, supply food and offer whatever comfort and commiseration they can.

“We all cry and cry and can’t stop crying for the loss of the family and the child,” one woman told CBS 2′s John Slattery.

“I don’t think there was a dry eye. When I heard about it, I just literally started crying and felt so bad for the family,” Rabbi Ari Pollack said.

Jonathan Schwartz said his son was a friend of Kletzky and tried to explain the death to his child.

“I said God loves kids and we don’t understand why God did it. Obviously I didn’t give him all the details of what happened,” Schwartz said.

Visitors to the Kletzky family are being greeted by a sign at the door of their Borough Park apartment building thanking them for their thoughts and prayers.

“We are forever grateful to God. We would also like to express to each and every individual, to our friends and neighbors and fellow New Yorkers and to all the volunteers…and to all from around the world who had us in their thoughts and prayers, from the depths of our mourning hearts, thank you,” the sign read.

FIrst of all, we SIt Shiva, we do not “sit and shiver.” Beyond that understandable mistake, his lawyer claims Aron hears voices but the only voice says “plead insanity, you’ll get out in a few years.” Look at psycho who attempted to murder Pres. Reagan: he served time in an institution,not such a rough incarceration, now takes extended, unsupervised trips from looney bin. What if he takes a fancy to another actress or public figure? Not so crazy that he doesn’t want to be out and about…This insanity defense is too easy, too available. Not every psychopath is insane and they need to be executed or locked away, without possibility of parole, for their entire life.
What dignity and goodness little Leiby’s family and community have shown. Very moving and heartbreaking.

Unfortunately, there have been sick and deranged people in all eras of the human race. Poor Lieby was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Imagine a lost child asking anyone else for directions…..you’d call 911 immediately! Instead, he encountered a psycho – a Jeffrey Dahmer……what terrible terrible luck for this poor child and his family. As for the murderer….he’ll never see the light of day again, whether in a cell, an institution or executed. I would prefer to see him executed, to ensure that he never gets out. They’re letting John Hinckley out on “visits” now…….dangerous!!!!!!

from what i understand about the crime, the youngster was following the perp, and indicated to him that he was lost. first degree murder requires premeditation, planning, intent and the rest of the whole nine yards. this appears to be an unfortunate chance meeting, which would rule out first degree, as the law states it. as heinous as is the crime, it does not rise to the level of first degree, but perhaps someone with a legal background could enlighten us if this assumption is incorrect.

Of course it was premeditated…………..after the animal realized that there are a lot of people looking for the kid and there is no way out, he PLANNED to kill, which is in a definition considered premeditation.

Perhaps this was planned? maybe he was lurking outside the camp somehow? We will never know – but what strikes me as odd is that this happened on the VERY FIRST day that the child was walking home alone…. Eye for an eye, as mentioned in previous comments is the way to go, but we are in NYS – and this is not allowed. He confessed and pled not guilty – what kind of maddness is that?

Levi Aron is a murderer and justifying it by hearing voices should lead the state legislators into passing a law that any person with psycho illness that hears voices should live in a special psycho home and not be allowed to live on the city streets, The cost of NYC Po;ice department for this search was over $2 million dollars and to keep him in a home his entire life would cost about a quarter of a million. and now to keep him in prison will cost the State 50k per year, it will cost the City aprox 1 Million in prosecution so make your calculations

The parents if they are truly God fearing people would have or will have to forgive Levi for their own good. Don’t think keeping hate, resentment, revenge and ill feelings towards Levi would do them any good in the long run unless they want tumors, cancers, depression and all sorts of sickness to come upon them. They would accomplish nothing but being more miserable and besides they have other small kids to worry about.

Having said that, I am not defending Levi at all. I am not standing up for Levi. I am just saying we have got to let the laws of the land take precedence in this sort of situation. We have got to wait and get all the facts and allow him his rights to a fair trial and hopefully he will be found guilty and get life in prison although execution would be more appropiate but in NY is not permitted.

I am so sad by the outcome of the search. I wish that Levi would have just let the boy go as soon as he said he panicked instead of killing him. Now if he goes to jail I believe he will be taken care off and sooner or later will end up like Jeffrey Dahmer killed.
