EAST RUTHERFORD – There were plenty of discussions about who may be coming or going, but Wednesday was a slow day at the Giants' complex by comparison to the first day of the NFL summer.

Who is coming or should we say staying? The team announced coach Tom Coughlin received a one-year contract extension for the 2012 season – something that was not much more than a formality, considering the Giants had no intention of allowing him to work in the final year of his deal.

Coughlin will meet with former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress on Friday to see if they can mend fences and pave the way for the veteran's possible return to the team. Burress planned to visit the camp Wednesday, but had to wait under the new NFL rules, so he returned to Florida to work out before he returns to New Jersey on Friday. The Giants are keeping an open mind – and while it's surprising that Burress, who did not enjoy playing under Coughlin, accepted the meeting – a positive reaction by both sides easily could lead to a contract offer for Burress to re-sign with the team.

Eli Manning and Justin Tuck said they've spoken to Burress and Tuck said it was not a reach to think Burress would be back nor did he think it was impossible for the receiver to come to a resolution with Coughlin. By the way, Burress is believed to have scheduled a meeting with the Steelers – his other former team – should the Giants' situation not work out.

At the same time, Tuck confirmed a WFAN report that Osi Umenyiora is expected to hold out in search of a better contract or a trade from GM Jerry Reese.

Brandon Jacobs, meanwhile, began reworking his deal in the hope that restructuring will allow the Giants to re-sign backfield mate Ahmad Bradshaw. Those talks continue as Bradshaw awaits word from the Giants as to whether they have enough funds to keep him.

Rocky Bernard reportedly did not accept a reworked deal and was told he will be released.

And finally, the Giants may have found their next center – they agreed to a contract with David Baas, who enters his seventh season having played more guard than center with the 49ers.
