Police Arrest Cody Santiago, Suspect In Purse Snatching Of Elderly Wheelchair-Bound Woman

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police announced Thursday the arrest of a suspect in the robbery of a wheelchair-bound elderly woman.

Surveillance video showed a man walking past 78-year-old Catalina Mateo, who was riding in her motorized wheelchair. In the video, the man simply reaches into her lap, snatching her purse and runs off in the opposite direction.

1010 WINS’ Carol D’Auria reports: Suspect Arrested At Mother’s Home

The incident took place at the corner of Wyckoff Avenue and Bleecker Street in Bushwick.

Tips helped police identify the suspect as 18-year-old Cody Santiago. Police said he has two prior arrests for theft and sex abuse.

Mateo was unhurt, but was left without her purse and everything inside it. She said her purse contained $15, medicine and a blood pressure monitor.  Now, Mateo said she feels scared to even leave her house.

“I’m handicapped. He didn’t accept my situation,” Mateo said. “That could happen again, to me or somebody else.”

Santiago lives with his mother on Grove Street. Neighbors there said he hadn’t been spotted in a few weeks.

“I never known him to get in trouble or anything — always a quiet kid,” Anthony Jordan said.

“Cody Santiago?!?” Shucks! Didn’t he ride with the Two-Gun Kid?

  3. thor's hammer says:

he’s got 2 serious priors. i’m with gi jim. but with some modification – a stint at parris island, followed by exposure to navy seal training, army ranger training with no break in between. only break he gets is the nonstop flight to kandahar not on a commercial airline, but a military cargo plane. back to back to back tours in the ‘stan. if/when we stand down from there, we’ll find some other level of dante’s inferno to send you to. not worth taxpayers paying for jail, 3 squares & a cot, and free education. lowlife. just be glad the cops found you and not a community watch group. justice for the victim!

    1. Pat says:

Yea right!! He is already robbing 78yr old disabled women and committing sex abuse, so let’s teach him how to kill too! I wonder what the world would be like if we applied your “solution” to all people like him.

  4. JMS says:

community service and working w/the elderly are good suggestions but for my part, if convicted, he should have to give the victim naked sponge baths every day for a year and hand wash her granny panties 4 times a day for a year. if that doesn’t keep him from repeating these types of offenses there’s no hope for him.

    PENNY!!!! My BFF🙂

  6. Bell Toller says:

Maybe he needed the money to get a haircut so he can go on a job interview and get employed.

  7. SoSo says:

He should be parole with the stipulation that he completes high school and 4 year college. If he cannot do this and stay out of trouble then he will be in voilation of his parole and sentence to the time it would have taken to complete these task.

  8. Fr. James O'Brien says:

Two prior arrests and he’s just 18. It’s a shame this young man’s future is so damaged…one can’t help but look to the parenting and upbringing. But there’s hope if this kid chooses to turn his life around. Let’s start by sentencing him to perform community service helping senior citizens and persons with disabilities – to instill a little humility and empathy.

  9. GI Jim says:

At 18, he still has a chance at rehabilitation. First, Paris Island or Quantico, complete with GI haircut. Then, 2 or 3 tours in Iraq or Afghanistan. Then, we see if he’s ready to return to society.

  10. Prince Rain Purple says:

His Mother will be lonely with him not around for about 10 days this
is a sad junky type of guy but a low level non larceny robbery with almost no jail time. He might get a little more time as a repeat offender but not much.

MICHAEL H.WHAT ARE YOU WORRYING ABOUT MARTHA TYPING HER COMMENTS IN BIG CAPS.

    1. Michael H. says:

Because I’m the mommy, that’s why.

  12. Martha Salvia Erickson says:

I DON’T SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WOMAN ON A WHEELCHAIR OR AND OLDER PERSON WALKING DOWN THE STREET ??? IT’S JUST AWFUL, BUT THE WOMAN SHOULD KNOW BETTER AND KEPT HER PURSE OUT OF SIGHT. BURGLERS DON’T CARE WHETER YOUR WEELCHAIR BOUND, WALK WITH A CANE , ROBE A CHURCH OR A CHILD. I REALLY DON’T SEE THE DIFFERENCE? SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CAREFUL WITH HER PURSE! WHAT ABOUT THE OLDER WOMAN THAT WAS KNOCK DOWN TO THE GROUND AND HURT FOR HER PURSE? IS THAT DIFFERENT? NEXT TIME SHE SHOULD KEEP HER PURSE BEHIND HER BACK. SORRY, I DON’T SEE THE DIFFERENCE

    1. Michael H. says:

You don’t see your caps lock key, either. It’s below the “Tab” key and above “Shift” on the left side of your keyboard. Please press it once.

      1. DanTe says:

Please leave the trash alone. It’s obvious that it has a broken keyboard and cannot afford a new one.

    2. Pro-Literacy says:

If you insist on blaming the elderly, wheelchair-bound victim, instead of the useless cowardly criminal, at least proofread!

Burglers, weelchair, robe? Are you his mother?

    3. Victim's granddaughter says:

so you’re basically saying this was my grandmother’s fault? If you don’t have anything encouraging to say to the victim or victims family then keep your mouth shut

  13. Carlos Liriano says:

if convicted of that crime he should be given 30 lashes with a bamboo stick
