Troopers say eight players from Mainland Regional High School near Atlantic City were in an SUV when it wrecked in Egg Harbor Township on Saturday.

Edgar Bozzi, Dean Khoury, Casey Brenner and Nick Conner died in the crash. The four other teens in the vehicle are in the hospital and are expected to survive.

The Press of Atlantic City reports the SUV was part of a caravan carrying coaches and players of the school's varsity and junior varsity football teams.

They were heading to an Old Country Buffet in May's Landing for breakfast as part of a yearly tradition.

Mainland Regional High School Superintendent Thomas Baruffi said Sunday that he hopes the loss will bring the school community closer together, but that would not be worth the sacrifice of four young lives.

He said the victims were good students, good athletes and popular.

Two of their teams' scrimmages scheduled for this week have been canceled. The team's first game is set for Sept. 9, and school starts Sept. 12.

Assistant football coach Rich Koeppel said that counselors would be available to students at the high school and a candlelight vigil would be held Sunday evening.
