Mother Of Murdered Queens Woman Killed In Hit-And-Run

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Police are searching for the driver of a van involved in a deadly hit and run accident Sunday in Springfield Gardens.

Tonya Jones, 40, was struck and killed at the intersection of 127th Street and Merrick Boulevard around 9:30 p.m.

1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg reports neighbors say Dollar van drivers are reckless

Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident but Jones’ family said she was riding a Dollar van when she got sick and fell out as the van sideswiped another vehicle.

Jones was pronounced dead at Queens General Hospital.

Police are trying to find the red or burgundy colored van they believe was involved in the accident.

The victim’s twin sister is pleading for the driver to come forward.

“If it was an accident, it was an accident but if you’re running that means you know what you did was wrong and you shouldn’t do that,” Tonyia Mobley told CBS 2.

“They should come forward,” Jones’ tenant Billy Clarke told 1010 WINS’ Steve Sandberg. “Accidents do happen. There’s an element of forgiveness in everything but they will have no rest if they don’t.”

Those who knew Jones said she was wonderful and vivacious but recently had been coping with the murder of her 20-year-old daughter who was gunned down in Queens in August.

You obviously do not live in the outer boro’s of NYC. Since city bus service sux so bad, van’s stop at the bus stops and for a dollar pick you up and drop you off where you need to be. It may be moe than a dollar now, don’t know, but a lot of these van’s are privately owned and do not fall under DOT and Livery rulings. Some are not even insured. Yes, getting in one that is not is taking your life in your hands. I suppose that this van and its driver will probably be gard to find as I can guarantee that he is not legal. Very sory for this ladies loss. It is an awful way to go.
