Driver Charged With Murder In Deadly Fort Lee Hit-And-Run

FORT LEE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Prosecutors say the man arrested early Tuesday and charged with killing his girlfriend in a hit-and-run in Fort Lee, New Jersey may have been trying to flee the country.

The Bergen County prosecutor’s office said 26-year-old Charles J. Ann has been charged with murdering 25-year-old Aena Hong after they say he ran over Hong several times with his car around 5 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Anderson Avenue and Inwood Terrace.

LISTEN: 1010 WINS’ Al Jones reports

Authorities say witnesses told police that Hong was walking along side Ann’s car arguing with him when he sped off, turned around and accelerated at Hong as she was crossing the street. Ann then drove over Hong at least three more times before taking off, officials said.

Witness Fengying Gao only speaks Chinese, but said she could tell there was trouble Monday evening, when she saw a man, believed to be Ann, yelling from his car to Hong.

Her son translated to CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis.

“They were, I think they were quarreling with each other, because the woman shouted ‘no no!’” Hong Liu said.

Cops said after dumping his car, Ann fled to Flushing, Queens where he was arrested at a friend Young Kim’s apartment early Tuesday morning around 4 a.m.

“I mean just surprised and shocked, you know,” Kim told CBS 2’s Dennis. “At the time I met them, they were fine. They were okay.”

Ann waived his right to extradition in a Queens courtroom on Tuesday afternoon.  Prosecutors said at the time of his arrest, Ann was carrying his passport and had a large amount of cash with him when he was arrested, indicating he may have been trying to flee the country.

Police found his black Hyundai Sonata parked in a neighborhood about a mile away from the scene.

Investigators said the two were in a “tumultuous dating relationship.” The young couple dated for less than a year and lived in a building by the George Washington Bridge. About a month ago, friends said she told him it was over and that Ann allegedly became enraged, CBS 2’s Pablo Guzman reported.

Mira Park, who was the victim’s English teacher at a language school, said she saw Ann harassing his former girlfriend, who told her teacher there were “relationship issues.”

“He had mental issues, and yeah, it’s just terrible. I just, I’m so shocked and stunned that something like this would happen,” Park said. “She was a sweet girl.  This is just a tragedy.”

Those who witnessed the scene Monday evening said it was horrifying.

“When I ran over there, I saw a body over there and it was just, it was horrific,” described witness Gene Hoffman. “It was a pretty horrible to see right in front of your place of employment and this community.”

Hong’s tennis shoes were found scattered in the street. Pam Roseland, a retired nurse, said she desperately tried to help.

“I just kept talking to her, I didn’t know what else to do,” she said. “She was definitely very, very hurt.”

Ann has been charged with murder and is being held on $3 million bail, considered a flight risk. He will be extradited back to Fort Lee on Friday. An autopsy was scheduled for Hong later Tuesday by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office.

I didn’t know Charles that well but I’ve heard stories from people. Let me tell you his story. When he was only a young child, his very rich father kicked out him and his mother out of the house. No where to go, they fled to America. In America, he had a shy personality and all the students thought he was weird and he had no friends. He became a frequent target for bullies daily. As he got older, he applied for jobs and sadly, he wasn’t hired for any of them. As he was doing this, he was seeking Korean American churches to go to, but because of his shy personality, no one would talk to him. He became isolated and the only person he had left was his girlfriend. Now, do you see a pattern of rejection here? His father, his school, his work, and his religion all rejected him. Now that his girlfriend rejected him, he became too angry of keep being rejected. I know killing someone isn’t right, but man, he was rejected too many times, and he lived a horrible life.

Hey, let us stop calling every Korean-American mentally unstable, like the only Koreans who break the law have mental problems.. He was not crazy. He simply was a criminal. Korean, Chinese, and Japanese husbands and boyfriends have been beating the hell out of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese women, wives and girlfriends for centuries. These are crimes and neighbors who witness them should anonymously call the police and report the abuse every time they see or hear Korean, Chinese, and Japanese men brutalizing their wives, girlfriends and children. If this had been done sooner maybe this poor Korean girl would still be alive.

First, this happens when mental health issues never get treated as its seen as embarrassing to admit one needs mental health help for many. Attitudes need to change. The Guy obviously had attachment issues for some trauma he probably endure as a child. People that often hurt others were hurt themselves or messed up by parents. Sorry to say but its true. A child that is terrorized for example and is consistently rejected by parents can become angry and react angrily with a trigger of abandonment like that, no one knows what made him that way but him. I feel horrible for the young woman this happened to, its beyond awful. To the posters that get off saying this guy will be violated in jail, you sick people get help yourself. And I feel for people that are victims of rage. Rage is pent up anger, often abused adults once abused children. Of course I feel worse for the young lady that lost her life tolerating his abuses with the horrible finality. 2 lives ruined because of maladapted attachment issues and God knows what else. People don’t just snap, monsters are often created.

lets make excuses for this muderous low life,he had a bad childhood,he had a bad relationship with his parents,he had attachment disorder…………..what a crock of crap……………….he’s a murderer, and should spend the rest of his lowly life in prison,it’s just that simple “rain”

    3. No Name says:

I think our school system should include emotion management education…We should let the youngsters to understand how important EQ is if they want to succeed. High IQ but low EQ gets you nowhere, and in extreme conditions, results in something like this.

  8. DDBronx says:

What is wrong here is a lot of young adults should be intruduced to anger management class. Instead, we promote sex education in school resulting in unwanted babies, abortion, divorse and terrible mishap…boy shot another boy over a girl, then go in jail. The girl moved on and married another smuck, why bother, just move onto the next girl… Why claims loving somone and ignore his/her own wish?? Great lover sometimes may say” I wish you happy with your new loved one.”..Or fight fairly…Not sucidal..

here we go again. no surprise that it was someone she knew who murdered her. my condolences to the good people of new jersey, who will have to come up with the money for his lawyer and long term incarceration. really, we could hope that he could be selected as the test pilot to test recalled bungee cords, secured to the uppermost tower of the gw bridge. we could also during that quality control exercise review punishment methods from the spanish inquisition, the native american peoples, the vikings. no 2nd chances. justice for his victim and her family only

  13. shoediva says:

So very sad. Just this morning I heard an entertainment reporter on the radio say that because Chris Brown won a Grammy Award this year, the music industry has obviously forgiven him for brutally beating Rhianna 3 years ago. I wonder how many times Charles Ann was forgiven for abusing Ms. Hong? Our society has to get on the right track with this. Abuse is never ok and should never be forgiven!

    1. Claude says:

Couldn’t agree more. Your example shows how American culture still denigrates and devalues women to a large degree. Boys should be taught early that they must respect females as equals, and that violence and bullying in general are wrong. It’s only when males shun other abusive males that society will outgrow a backward, harmful mentality.

  14. crazy story says:

RIP to that poor woman. Praying for her family to find some peace after this brutal murder. This is another case of a love relationship gone bad. Some people have no respect for human life. If someone does not love you any more, let go. You will be happier. So sad

  15. RoyBoySays says:

The sad part is,his parents will bail him out,he will flee to Korea, and never be seen again, that’s how it historically goes in Bergen County…just ask our ace Prosecutors Office

  16. TRACK says:

I believe many males believe when they are dating you they own you! Many young women say that their boyfriends hit or beat them and when breaking up with them, they become enraged! Ladies n gents be careful who you date. Be nice if you can get some lowdown on before last person broke up with them. It’s just not so safe anymore.

    1. 2012 says:

It’s usually the Asian and Muslim men that treat women like cr$p. Then they come to America and think they could do that here. This guy looks like such a little wuss, but is as evil and disgusting as they come.

    2. Claude says:

Sir, I think you’ve made too many assumptions to imply that the woman somehow provoked this outburst of violence. Nothing explains this young man’s conscious decision to make a U-turn and run over the woman. If he’s capable of that, I doubt he knows how to be good to any woman. I’ve been rejected and dumped in my life, but I never beat or killed the woman in response.

  17. frshtk123 says:

if you thought that was funny, it isn’t …don’t make that connection, please.

    RIP Aena hong 😦
    and wow $3 mil bail..

    1. Rodin says:

Really should be NO bail. This guy is a definite flight risk. He already had it in mind with his stash and passport in hand.

      1. Peace says:

Cannot agree more!!! His parents will just bail him out and they flight back to Korea and never seen again. He must face his justice HERE where his crime shall be paid in full!

        1. Say hi to LIFE IN PRISON says:

His parents do not have the 3 mill to put up for bond.No bondsman will take this knowing the whole family will flee first chance they get.

      2. kcho says:

agreed!! I don’t know what was going through this guys head. I can’t believe he thought he could get away by trying to leave the country.

And I send my condolences to the victim’s family.
