Kelly Calls Shooting Of 8-Year-Old Bronx Boy 'Unacceptable'

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has called the shooting of an 8-year-old boy in the Bronx "an unacceptable reality in the poorer neighborhoods'' of New York City.

Police say 8-year-old Armando Bigo was shot in the arm Tuesday night while standing outside of Bodega in the Bronx.

Surveillance video from the store shows the moment the boy was shot in the shoulder. Bigo is seen barely flinching as the bullet pierces his left shoulder. You then see him bring his hand to his arm and then turn around, confused.

Witnesses tell police an earlier fight outside the Bodega re-ignited and a man on a bike rode by and opened fire, aiming for people standing near the entrance to the store, hitting Bigo.

This morning, Kelly is lashing out at the senseless crime. In an editorial in the Daily News, Kelly vows to continue using controversial tactics like "stop and frisk" to cut down on illegal guns.

The boy remains in fair condition at Jacobi Hospital where he is surrounded by his family.

Police are still searching for the gunman.
