NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Movie-goers across the country are finally getting to see one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year.

Fans waited in long lines Thursday night for a chance to see the midnight showing of “The Hunger Games.” More than 2,500 showings across the country were sold out.

1010 WINS’ Eileen Lehpamer Reports From Lincoln Center

Eileen Lehpamer of 1010 WINS was at the Lincoln Center AMC Theater, where there were 13 screenings — all starting between midnight and 12:30 a.m.

The fans, many dressed in costume, arrived hours before the showings even though they bought their tickets more than a month ago.

There was plenty of gold face paint, teal wigs and even a woman with a bow and arrow imitating “The Hunger Games” heroine Katniss Everdeen.

“Believe me, I have carried some crazy stuff down the streets of New York City, but a bow and arrow…,” she told Lehpamer.

Fandango said it was selling 10 tickets per second. The sci-fi action film stars Jennifer Lawrence.

“The Hunger Games” is expected to set a box office record for a March release.
