Mets Place Jason Bay On 15-Day DL With Rib Fracture
NEW YORK (WFAN) -- It has become a familiar refrain for Mets fans: Jason Bay to the disabled list.
Bay has been placed on the 15-day DL with a non-displaced fracture of a rib on his left side, the team announced Tuesday.
Infielder Zach Lutz, who was batting .333 with three home runs and 10 RBIs for Triple-A Buffalo, will take Bay's place on the roster.
Lutz will wear No. 19, the Mets said.
The struggling outfielder was injured attempting to catch a two-run double off the bat of San Francisco's Gregor Blanco in the second game of a doubleheader Monday. Bay, unable to make the grab, landed awkwardly near the warning track in left field.
X-rays taken Monday were negative. An MRI Tuesday revealed the extent of the injury.
In his third season with New York, the oft-ailing Bay was averaging .240 with three home runs and five RBIs.
