NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -  A 15-year-old boy has died after falling from the FDR Drive, officials said.

Justin Smith slipped by accident off a railing and fell into the East River near 102nd Street and 105th Street at round 8:15 p.m on Saturday night. Smith fell into the chilly water while playing around with friends, officials believe.

A rescue unit pulled the boy from the water, where he was then taken to the Metropolitan Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

As of now, it’s unclear whether drowning was the cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
