Giants, Jets Honoring Newtown And Sandy Hook Elementary

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York Giants tweeted at 3:08 p.m. they are honoring the Newtown, Connecticut community and Sandy Hook Elementary by displaying S.H.E.S on the back of their helmets.

The Giants tweeted on Saturday afternoon:

"Giants to honor students and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary and community of Newtown with S.H.E.S. on back of helmets."

On Sunday afternoon, the Giants will face the Atlanta Falcons.  The NFL has asked its teams to observe a moment of silence before this weekend's games.

The New York Jets have joined the Giants in honoring the victims of the shooting.  According to the Jets' official website, the team will wear a S.H.E.S. decal on their helmets.

"Thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by today's horrific tragedy in Connecticut," Jets' owner Woody Johnson stated via Twitter.

Teams and athletes around the world have kept the Newtown community in their thoughts, prayers and own tributes.

Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder wrote Newtown, CT on his sneakers for his game against the Sacramento Kings on Friday.

Deron Williams of the Nets: "My prayers go out to all the victims and their families of the shooting this am in CT. Makes me sick to my stomach."

Kyle Okposo of the Islanders: "Things need to change. I don't know where to start, but I hope and pray that compassion and love find a lasting place in everyones hearts."

Henrik Lundqvist of the Rangers: "The tragedy in Newton makes me feel sick to my stomach. Thoughts go out to all the families impacted by this."

Santonio Holmes of the Jets: "Tragedy has struck again, the world we live in 2012 the end is not happening!!!"

LeBron James of the Miami Heat: "This is really messing with my mind. Kids is everything to me! And of course i have 2 of my own in elementary school as well. I can't … imagine it happening to my kids school. I and the rest of the families would be devastated! Something has to be done. Land of the free, BS!"

Former Yankees' outfielder Nick Swisher: "I'm heartbroken for the victims and families of the shooting in Connecticut. My thoughts and prayers are with you."
