Marist Poll: Anthony Weiner Shows Gains In NYC Mayoral Race
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Anthony Weiner's support with registered democrats appears to be on the rise.
A week after he formally announced his candidacy for New York City mayor, a new poll conducted by the Marist Institute for Public Opinion finds the former congressman is gaining ground on front runner Christine Quinn.
Among registered Democrats in NYC, if the Democratic primary were held today, here is how the outcome would look:
- 24% Christine Quinn
- 19% Anthony Weiner
- 12% Bill de Blasio
- 11% Bill Thompson
- 8% John Liu
- 1% Sal Albanese
- <1% Erick Salgado
- 1% Other
- 23% Undecided
"When we put him in a runoff, which would occur right now between Quinn and Weiner if the primary were held today, Quinn beats Weiner by 48 to 33," Marist College Poll Director Lee Miringoff told WCBS 880. "So what is a relatively close race with the entire field becomes a 15-point advantage for Quinn if she's matched up just directly against Weiner in the runoff.
"He may, in fact, be taking all the oxygen out of the room and depriving the second-tier candidates -- de Blasio, Thompson, Liu, etc. -- of getting a lot of attention they so desperately want," Miringoff added.
"So in a sense, he's a factor not only in his own right but in some ways, he's a road block between those other candidates who are trying to target Quinn because Weiner gets so much attention and yet he himself has very high negatives."
A candidate would need 40 percent support to avoid a runoff.
