Babysitter Charged In Death Of 4-Year-Old Newark Girl

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A babysitter has been charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the death of a 4-year-old Newark girl.

Police were called to an apartment at the Bradley Court houses on North Munn Avenue around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said a bed had fallen on top of the girl, identified as Naira Bennett, inside the apartment, CBS 2's Dick Brennan reported Wednesday.

When officers arrived, the girl was not responsive, police said. She was taken to University Hospital, where she died hours later.

Authorities said the little girl and "three other very young children" were unsupervised at the time of the incident. They had been left unattended by a babysitter for an undetermined period of time, police said.

The babysitter, 38-year-old Sakita Covington, was arrested and charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a child and one count of aggravated assault.

She is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy, and the investigation is ongoing.
