Riot Forces Lockdown At Rikers Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Some inmates were injured after a riot broke out overnight at Rikers Island, forcing a lockdown of the jail.
No serious injuries were reported and the correction officers union insists none of their personnel were hurt, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported.
News of the unrest comes as the city reviews procedures at the correctional facility and lines up changes suggested by the federal government.
U.S. Attorney Prett Bharara recently issued a scathing report saying there is a deep seeded culture of violence by guards, especially against younger male inmates, and excessive use of solitary confinement.
Recently, a judge ruled that two correction officers now face suspension for beating up a handcuffed prisoner in solitary confinement in 2011.
