Report: Rex Has Known All Season That Idzik's Plan Is To Fire Him

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With each passing week, it's looking less and less likely that the Jets will retain head coach Rex Ryan after the season.

Neither owner Woody Johnson nor general manager John Idzik has indicated that Ryan is on the hot seat, but the Jets are 2-9 and will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

With only five games left on the schedule, we should know Ryan's fate sooner rather than later.

But according to the New York Post, Ryan has known all season that Idzik would eventually fire him.

In the offseason, the newspaper reports, Ryan was told by scouts and coaches from around the NFL that Idzik had been making it known that his plan was to let Ryan go after 2014 and bring in a new head coach.

"Did he think that wasn't going to get back to me?" Ryan told one confidant, the New York Post reported.

Ryan and Idzik have spoken highly of each other publicly throughout this disaster of a season. But Idzik left his coach shorthanded in the talent department, strangely staying more than $20 million under the salary cap.

It's left some to wonder whether Idzik's job is in danger, as well.

Following an encouraging victory over the Steelers on November 9, the Jets were embarrassed by the Bills on Monday Night Football two nights ago to the tune of 38-3.

"One thing I know, unless it changes drastically, I will be the head coach here for the next five weeks," Ryan told reporters after the game.

And after those five weeks? Buckle up, folks.

GENO TO START AGAINST DOLPHINS

After taking over for Michael Vick two nights ago against Buffalo at Ford Field, the Jets announced on Wednesday morning that Geno Smith will start against the Dolphins on Monday night.
