David Wright Shut Down With Back Pain; No Timetable For His Return

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets got some good news, and then some really bad news, on Friday.

The good news first: David Wright was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery on Thursday night, and he's recovering well from the hamstring injury he sustained against the Phillies on April 14.

Now for the bad news. The captain has experienced lower-back pain in recent days. An MRI revealed no structural damage, but the third baseman won't resume baseball activity until the discomfort subsides.

There is no timetable for his return.

After Wright was placed on the disabled list, Eric Campbell was recalled to start at third base. He started off strong, but struggled shortly thereafter and was sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday.

In 16 games, Campbell hit just .200 with a homer and five RBIs.

In recent days, the Mets have shifted second baseman Daniel Murphy to third base and started 21-year-old Dilson Herrera at second.

Prior to getting hurt, Wright went 11-for-33 (.333) with a home run, four RBIs and two stolen bases in eight games.

The Mets will kick off a three-game series against the National League East-rival Phillies on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Matt Harvey is on the mound, opposing Cole Hamels.
