Medical Examiner: Connecticut Couple Died Of Gunshot Wounds

FARMINGTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Medical examiners say a Connecticut couple whose remains were found last week, three months after they disappeared, died from gunshot wounds.

The Chief Medical Examiner's Office said Thursday that Jeanette Navin was shot in her "torso and extremities'' and Jeffrey Navin was shot in his "trunk.'' The agency didn't elaborate.

The Easton couple disappeared Aug. 4 and their bodies were found Oct. 29 behind a vacant home in neighboring Weston.

Police charged their son, Kyle Navin, with murder and his girlfriend, Jennifer Valiante, with conspiracy to commit murder.

Kyle Navin, who was already in federal custody on a weapons charge, was formally charged with murder on Tuesday and ordered held in lieu of $2.5 million bond.

His lawyer, Eugene Riccio, said the hearing was "just the start of a long judicial process."

"And I think experience has taught all of us that we have to reserve our judgment about these situations 'till all of the facts are known," Riccio said.

Valiante denies any involvement in the killings.

"She has maintained that she has nothing to do with this," Valiante's lawyer, Elliot Warren, said. "She was looking for Kyle's parents as soon as she realized they were missing and trying to help find them."

Authorities say Jeanette Navin was upset about her son's drug use and behavior, and the couple was planning to cut their son out of their will.

Kyle Navin is due back in court on Nov. 24.
