Report: Nets Offer GM Job To Spurs' Exec Sean Marks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Order may be restored to the Nets' front office soon.

According to a report from Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Brooklyn has apparently zeroed in on its top choice for it vacant general manager position, offering the job to San Antonio Spurs assistant GM Sean Marks.

Marks, 40, is a rising star and won't be easy to pry away from the perennial power Spurs, who are expected to do everything they can to keep him, Wojnarowski reported.

An NBA player for 12 years, Marks joined the San Antonio front office in 2013.

Marks is Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov's first choice to turn around a team that is currently a woeful 14-40, but there are others should Marks say no. According to an ESPN report, Brooklyn had shortened its list of candidates to three, including former Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns general manager Bryan Colangelo and Denver Nuggets assistant GM Arturas Karnisovas.

Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday that Houston Rockets vice president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas is also a candidate, though not a frontrunner.

The Nets are looking for a new GM and head coach after reassigning GM Billy King and firing coach Lionel Hollins on Jan. 10. Prokhorov reportedly wants the front office fixed before setting his sights on a head coach. Tony Brown has been coaching the Nets in the interim.

Assistant general manager Frank Zanin has been filling in for King since the front office shakeup and will likely call the shots should the Nets be active leading up to Thursday's trade deadline. There have been trade rumors reported involving Thaddeus Young, Brook Lopez, Joe Johnson and Andrea Bargnani.

Whoever takes over the Nets will face some challenges in rebuilding the roster. Because of the 2013 trade for Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry, the Nets still owe the Celtics their 2016 and 2018 first-round draft picks plus the right to swap slots in the 2017 draft.

The team, however, could have about $40 million in salary cap space to spend this offseason.
