Selfies, Fingerprints The Future Of Online Shopping?

New technology could provide online shoppers with payment options to better protect themselves from fraud.

Mastercard wants to use selfies to approve online purchases and is planning to roll out the new pay system in more than a dozen countries this year.

The credit card giant said selfies and fingerprint scans are safer than typed passwords, many of which are easy for scammers to guess, CBS2's Alex Denis reported.

Users must download Mastercard's Identity Check app. When checking out online, shoppers will be required to look at their phone's camera as if taking a selfie and blink, which prevents thieves from showing a picture and tricking the app.

The fingerprint scan is easier, especially for users with a new iPhone which has the technology already built in.

Mastercard is also researching ways to use heartbeats and eye scans to authenticate purchases.

Other companies are looking at new ways to prevent fraud.

HSBC account holders will soon be able to use their fingerprint and voice to access money.
