Mets' Jacob DeGrom Placed On Family Emergency Leave To Attend To Newborn Son

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom has been placed on family medical emergency leave due to "complications" with his newborn son, manager Terry Collins said Saturday.

DeGrom left the team this week to travel to Florida to be with his wife, Stacey, in Florida for the birth of the couple's first child. Jaxon Anthony was born at 9:23 p.m. Monday, weighing 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

Collins did not provide specifics about Jaxon's condition, but told reporters it's a "real life situation."

"We're all praying for him," Collins said.

DeGrom had been dealing with a lat injury he suffered in the Mets' April 8 home opener, but Collins said that is no longer an issue and he could have made his scheduled start Tuesday. The team gave deGrom permission to remain in Florida this week to be closer to his family. On Friday, he threw an abbreviated bullpen session at the Mets' spring training complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Placing him on the medical emergency list means deGrom will be away from the team another three to seven days and allows the Mets to replace him on the roster in the meantime.

The Mets are on the road against the Cleveland Indians this weekend.
