'Tremendous News': DeGrom's Newborn Son Improving Following Health Complications

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Jacob deGrom's newborn son has improved following a health scare.

"The baby is doing better. So that was a good sign. I just told Jake he needs to get some rest and mix in a meal," New York Mets manager Terry Collins told MLB.com, adding that it was "tremendous news."

The Mets placed the pitching ace on the family medical emergency list Saturday after his newborn son Jaxon suffered health complications.

Collins said deGrom was exhausted, "mentally more than physically."

DeGrom's wife, Stacey, gave birth to Jaxon last Monday.

DeGrom, who made the NL All-Star team last season, will be on the list from three to seven days.

DeGrom was dealing with a sore lat muscle on his right side. He won his only start of the season on April 8, allowing one run in six innings against Philadelphia. DeGrom threw 25 pitches during a bullpen session on Friday in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Collins said the right-hander will throw again Sunday and could face hitters Tuesday.

Logan Verrett will start Tuesday in Philadelphia. He took deGrom's spot in the rotation last Wednesday and pitched six shutout innings against the Marlins.

The Mets are hoping deGrom can make his April 25 start against the Cincinnati Reds.

Utility man Eric Campbell was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take deGrom's roster spot.
