Christie Weighs In On Possibility Of Being VP Pick, Won't Discuss Bridgegate Co-Conspirator List
WEST TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Wednesday that he does not know whether heading Donald Trump's presidential transition team will make him a favorite for running mate.
"I have no idea, you'll have to ask Donald that," Christie said at a news conference Wednesday. "That's not something that we discussed."
As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, Christie said the priority for Trump and Christie now is less about filling cabinet positions and more about the nuts and bolts.
"My first job is to put together a staff to run the transition with me," Christie said.
Trump said Tuesday is moving aggressively to identify potential running mates and said he now has "a very good list of five or six people." He said he had not ruled out Christie.
Meanwhile, Christie also said he thinks it is "highly doubtful" that he will be included on a list of unindicted co-conspirators in the Bridgegate scandal.
Christie said Wednesday that he does not think he is on the list because he didn't know what was going on when former allies allegedly conspired to close lanes of the George Washington Bridge for political retribution in September 2013.
As to who might be on the list, Christie refused to talk about.
"I'm not going to speculate on any list that none of you know anything about, and I don't know anything about," he said.
Of Bridgegate in general, he said: "This is old news, everybody. I'm done with that. Old news."
U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton said Tuesday is in the public's interest for the government to disclose the list. The ruling came after a lawsuit filed by media organizations.
Wigenton gave prosecutors until Friday to release the list in an order Wednesday.
Two former allies were indicted last spring on wire fraud and civil rights deprivation charges. Christie's former deputy chief of staff Bridget Kelly and former Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official Bill Baroni were indicted last spring on wire fraud and civil rights deprivation charges in the case. They have pleaded not guilty in the case.
Former Port Authority official David Wildstein pleaded guilty last year and is expected to testify against Kelly and Baroni.
Christie has insisted he was in the dark and has not been charged.
