On Wednesday, 1010 WINS got a behind-the-scenes look as crews on Staten Island set up 56,000 shells and mortars onto five barges, which will be moved over to the East River for the main event.

Fifty pyrotechnicians laid out 15 miles of cable to hand wire the fireworks one by one.

Some of the fireworks measure up to 10-inches in diameter and weigh as much as 35 pounds.

"We've got incredible, new pyrotechnics that are going to come to life this Fourth of July and we're going to write in the sky. You're going to see 'USA' come blazing through the sky, and every year we've had smiley faces that everybody loves," Amy Kule, the show's executive producer, told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck.

The show is celebrating its 40th anniversary and Macy's promises this year's event will be the largest display since the millennium show in 2000.

As they do every year, Macy's is adding new technology.

"We've got an app that everybody can download called 'Make Light,'" Kule said. "When the fireworks are being detonated, your phone will sync to the fireworks and the colors on your phone will change matching up to what color's in the sky."

The fireworks may be viewed in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn from any area with an unobstructed view of the sky above the East River. Here are some great spots to watch the show.

"It's a breathtaking, beautiful, patriotic show," Kule said.

The event will be broadcast live on 1010 WINS, the official radio station of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular.

"1010 WINS has been our broadcast partner for a really long time, they've been absolutely incredible partners and I can't see doing this event without you," Kule told Schuck.
