Subway Slowdown: Wait Times Up 14 Percent Since 2015, Report Says

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- If it seems like it's taking longer for your subway train to arrive, you're not just imagining things.

A report released at a Metropolitan Transit Authority meeting Monday shows that overall subway performance is 18 percent worse than last year, with extended wait times and delays jumping nearly 14 percent since last September, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

New York City Transit president Ronnie Hakim says they have found some success with so-called "platform controllers."

"Those are the individuals that are on the platform that are there to facilitate efficient loading and unloading of our cars," Hakim told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond. 'That has proven to be a successful deployment of resources and one that we will be extending and expanding next year."

An MTA spokesperson says the decline in performance is also due to an aging fleet. The spokesperson said the MTA is working to mitigate these issues by replacing key components before they cause breakdowns.
