U.N. General Assembly: Traffic Advisories, Road Closures

World leaders are descending on New York for the United Nations General Assembly, and with that will come road closures and traffic delays. The U.N. General Assembly begins its week-long session of high-level meetings Tuesday, Sept. 13, meaning New Yorkers can expect major traffic headaches on Manhattan's East Side.

The NYPD is encouraging the use of public transportation for the duration of the session as street closures will be in effect on the East Side all week. Police said the road closures end when the U.N. session ends each day.

From Tuesday, Sept. 13, through Monday, Sept. 26 at the NYPD's discretion, the following roads will be closed:

  • 60th Street on the north
  • 34th Street on the south;
  • First Avenue on the east;
  • 3rd Avenue on the west;
  • 51st Street on the north;
  • 48th Street on the south;
  • First Avenue on the east;
  • Madison Avenue on the west.

The following specific stretches of road:

  • 34th Street between FDR Drive and Seventh Avenue;
  • 42nd Street between FDR Drive and Seventh Avenue;
  • 50th Street between FDR Drive and Seventh Avenue;
  • 53rd Street between FDR Drive and Seventh Avenue;
  • 54th Street between Third Avenue and Seventh Avenue;
  • 57th Street between FDR Drive and Seventh Avenue;
  • 48th Street between First Avenue and FDR Drive Service Road;
  • 49th Street between First Avenue and FDR Drive Service Road;FDR Drive Service Road between 48th Street and 49th Street;
  • 51st Street between Sixth Avenue and Third Avenue;
  • 51st Street between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue;
  • 56th Street between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue;
  • 52nd Street between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue;
  • 6th Avenue between West 53rd Street and West 55th Street;
  • West 54th Street between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue;
  • 59th Street between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue;
  • 58th Street between Sixth Avenue and Fifth Avenue;
  • FDR Drive between Whitehall Street and Willis Avenue Bridge / Robert F. Kennedy Triboro Bridge.

The following streets will be completely closed to traffic beginning Sunday, Sept. 18 at 10 p.m.

  • 1st Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street. The tunnel underpass from 41st Street to 48 Street will remain open
  • 44th Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue • 45th Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue
  • 46th Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue

On Sunday, the FDR DRIVE will be subject to intermittent closures:

  • Southbound at 63rd Street
  • Northbound at South Ferry

The following streets will have one lane designated for emergency vehicles starting Monday, Sept. 19 through Friday, Sept. 23:

  • 42nd Street from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue
  • 57th Street from 2nd Avenue to 5th Avenue
  • 2nd Avenue from 41st Street to 57th Street

Trucks and other large vehicles will not be able to access:

  • Madison Avenue from 48th Street to 52nd Street

The following streets in the vicinity of the United Nations will continued to be closed to vehicular traffic Tuesday through Saturday:

  • 1st Avenue from 42nd Street to 48th Street.
  • The tunnel underpass from 41st Street to 48 Street will remain open passenger cars.

The following will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at approximately 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday:

  • 42nd Street from the FDR Drive to 2nd Avenue
  • 42nd Street Exit and Entrance Ramps of the FDR Drive
  • Note: These areas will reopen each evening after the day's session.
