Long Island Woman Fights For More Sidewalks
DEER PARK, NY (WCBS 880) - Trucks, cars, and minivans rush by you at high speeds on Long Island Avenue in Deer Park.
LISTEN: WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reports
This road is very important because it leads to the train station.
Patricia Burkhart says the problem is that there is no safe place for pedestrians to walk.
"No sidewalks. No bike lanes. Nothing," Burkhart told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.
Hall asked, "Do you feel like you're taking your life in your own hands?"
Burkhart answered, "Very much so, and it's terrifying."
She has been fighting since 2005 for more sidewalks in her Long Island community, especially after she was hit by a car.
