9 People Hurt After Staten Island Van Crash

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Nine people were hurt on Staten Island after a transport van collided with an SUV and crashed into a utility pole.

It happened shortly after 4 p.m. Monday afternoon on Genesee Avenue near Abingdon Avenue in Great Kills.

Eight people were seriously hurt and the other was critically injured. All of them were taken to Staten Island University North Hospital.

Eyewitnesses told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa the SUV ran a stop sign and smashed into the side of the van.  Both vehicles were lifted off the ground as they smashed into two trees -- knocking one down.

"When I got here, I saw people laying [on the street].  They were all in neck braces," Mike Lakow said.

Residet Joe Brandi told Papa it was the second accident of the day at the same intersection, where there is only one stop sign for the two way streets.

The Staten Island Advance reported on its website that the van was carrying handicapped adults from a group home.

An investigation is continuing.
