WCBS 880's Catherine Cioffi reports

A spokeswoman for the board says the bill, approved Monday night by a vote of 10-6, would limit county legislators to six two-year terms in office.

The county executive would be limited to three four-year terms.

Legislator John Nonna called term limits an "idea whose time has come.'' The Democratic chair of the board's Legislation Committee and co-sponsor of the bill says term limits will allow others committed to public service the opportunity to serve as well.

The legislation will take effect Jan. 1, 2012.
