Report: Knicks Hire Former Nuggets GM As Consultant

NEW YORK (WFAN) -- Ex-Nuggets general manager Mark Warkentien as been hired as a "high-level consultant" to the New York Knicks, Yahoo! Sports reported late Sunday night.

Warkentien, who was known to have a strong relationship with Carmelo Anthony, could help the Knicks lure Denver's embattled forward to New York.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh wouldn't confirm the hire on Sunday.

"I have nothing to report at this time," Walsh said.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Warkentien's role "is expected to be a prelude to a larger and more specific front-office role in the future."

"Walsh had difficulty selling Garden ownership on hiring a full-fledged deputy ... but finally cleared the way to get Warkentien hired in the consultant's role," reported Wojnarowski.

It has been rumored all season long that New York is Anthony's preferred destination.

"My options are open right now," Anthony said last week. "I really don't know what's going on right now and it's four, three weeks away from the (trading) deadline."

Anthony insisted he's not picky about where he ends up playing.

"No short list," he said. "No long list."
