1 Arrested After Fatal Shooting At Queens Birthday Party

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect is in custody following a tragic deadly shooting at a suprise birthday party in Queens over the weekend.

Avalisa Morris, 26, was shot and killed around 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning at a friend's house in St. Albans.

Police say Morris had helped kick out two uninvited guests and was guarding a closed door when gunfire erupted. Morris was shot in the head and abdomen and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"She tried to help, she tried to keep everyone safe – fight was outside, she tried to close the door," cousin Lennox Grant said.

"That's her. That's Avalisa, that's what she'd do," Lennox Grant, the victim's cousin, said.

O'Neil Mairs, 23, was arrested Monday and is charged with murder, weapons possession and reckless endangerment. Police say he crashed the party and fired two rounds through the door after he wasn't allowed inside.

Neighbors say it was the second deadly shooting on the block in the past year.

"All this shooting and people dying, I don't know what it's all about," neighbor Cory Johnson said.
