Queens Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty

NEW YORK (AP) -- A Queens woman was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after officials found a 35-pound dog in her apartment that was so weak it couldn't stand.

ASPCA official Joe Pentangelo said officers went to the woman's home Saturday in response to a tip.

The female mixed-breed dog had badly matted hair and the woman said she hadn't taken the animal to a veterinarian in years.

The dog was euthanized after a medical examination. The 47-year-old woman faces up to a year in jail or a $1,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor charge.
